Muscles of matication 雖然只有四塊，但 medial pterygoid 和 lateral pterygoid 的接點還挺複雜的，要仔細分辨。
首先是最大塊的 temporalis muscle（顳肌），它被 temporal fascia 覆蓋，填滿整個 temporal fossa，往下從 zygomatic arch 和 infratemporal crest of the greater wing 之間穿過，接到 mandible 的 coronoid process 上，沿 ramus 前側延伸到 tooth 的位置。可以 elevation 或 retraction mandible。它由 CN V3 mandibular nerve 在 infratemporal fossa 分支出來進入 temporal fossa 的 deep temporal nerve 控制。
接下來是另一個 elevator of mandible，masseter muscle（嚼肌、咬肌）。它的起點在 zygomatic arch，接到 ramus 的外側（Netter 上說有接到 coronoid process 外側面，但看模型沒有）。它又可以細分為 superficial part（從 maxillary process 和 zygomatic process 的前三分之一接到 ramus 靠近 angle 的外側面）和 deep part（從 zygomatic arch 的中間接到 ramus 靠近 coronoid process 的外側面）。由 masseteric nerve from CN V3 控制。
接下來兩塊位於 infratemporal fossa 的肌肉起點會比較複雜一些。先記下 medial 是豎的，lateral 是橫的！這是它們兩最重要的區別，知道橫豎方向再找起止點就快了。還有，它們兩的 medial 和 lateral 指的是 pterygoid porcess of sphenoid bone 的 lateral plate 的內外側面，這也很重要。
先看 medial pterygoid muscle（翼內側肌），它 deep head 的起點在 pterygoid process 的 lateral plate 的內側面，而 superficial head 的起點在 tuberosity of maxilla 上。Deep head 和 superficial head 都往後下接到 ramus 靠近 angle 的內側突起。由來自 CN V3 的 nerve to medial pterygoid 控制。
再看 lateral pterygoid muscle（翼外肌），它的 upper head 起點在 inferior surface of greater wing 和 infratemporal crest，lower head 與 medial pterygoid muscle 的 deep head 相反，在 lateral plate 的外側面。兩個 head 水平往後一起接到 pterygoid fovea 和 capsule of the temporomandibular joint。Medial 的 fibers 是垂直的，lateral 是水平的，所以 lateral pterygoid 是 major protruder of lower jaw（下巴往前伸）。Lateral 由 CN V3 的 nerve to the lateral pterygoid nerve 控制。
